Replacement Handles For Windows

Window handles are among the most used parts of your double glazed windows. Over time, they may be worn out or rusty.

To replace a UPVC window handle, you have to know the spindle length of your existing handle and its fixings. This can be done by examining the base of the old handle.

Handle

Over time, uPVC handles and window locks can be damaged by wear and tear or accidental or deliberate damage. This could mean that the handle or lock becomes difficult to open or close, or it's not locked at all. It could be tempting to replace your entire window unit if this occurs, but it's not always necessary. In most instances the case, a new handle or lock is all that's needed.

The espagnolette design is the most common uPVC window handle. The handle is equipped with an outer spindle that extends out of the handle. It slots into a gearbox that operates the multipoint locking system inside the window. It is crucial to match the appropriate handle and lock to your windows in order to ensure they work together correctly. That's why we carry a broad range of replacement handles for all types of uPVC windows.

When replacing a uPVC window handle, it's a good idea to use screw cap caps to cover the screws to keep the screws secure and protect them from corrosion. You can also use a washer, spacer or other sealant to create a more secure fit. A screw cap can stop debris and water from getting into the handle, causing damage.

After taking the handle out of the window, it is a good idea for you to clean the spindle and the threaded portion of the bolt. This will ensure that the handle fits and functions properly and will also prevent dirt from entering the multipoint lock.

Next it's time to install the new uPVC handle. Be sure to read the instructions that came with your new handle. You can also take a look at the handle you had previously to get a better understanding of how to do it. Usually, the process is quite simple. If you run into any issues that aren't covered in this guide, we recommend contacting our team to get more details.

It is also important to know that in the event that you are replacing a uPVC handle called a cockspur (also called Espag handle) you'll require the step height of your window to determine the proper size handle. The steps height refers to the distance from the frame or base of the window to the point at which the nose of the cockspur handle rests when it is put in place.

Hinges

If your windows begin to close and open with a visible gap, this can be caused by the hinges not being in line with the frame. It's usually a straightforward fix that can be fixed by replacing the hinges. We have a variety of different options and even modify the dimensions of the hinges to suit your needs.

Whether you have a standard upvc or timber window, we can supply an array of various kinds of window hinges. The hinges are available in different colours to fit with the existing frames. They are also supplied with all the fixings you need for installation. If you have a double-glazed window with an older style of hinge, we can supply a range of repair screw packs that allow you to cut the thread from the previous form back into the frame.

We have a variety of hinge styles. This includes conventional casement hinges that can be used with a tilt and turn handle or a standard handle as well as the fire escape egress sash hinges, which are specifically designed for larger side-hung windows. These hinges are designed to fully open in an urgent situation and include an easy-clean position. We also stock hinges that are restricted in egress and are designed to limit the opening angle of the window to 100mm or less which is ideal for homes with children.

A squeaky hinge could be a sign that the hinges must be replaced. It is usually caused by metal rubbing against metal. A small drop of lubricant can help, however if the noise persists it is likely that the hinges require replacement.

This is because plumb windows are in a position to avoid binding. The operating sash is aligned with the frame so that the window will close and open in a proper manner. A window that isn't plumb may begin to open and close with difficulty or may become warped over time which can affect the seal as well as the appearance of the window.

You can purchase replacement upvc windows hinges in imperial or metric measurements. The sizes that are metric tend to be a little more precise, however this isn't really noticeable when they are installed. The first corner holes on the track are standard but the other holes can vary based on the original hardware. We advise that you measure the spacing of holes on your existing frame prior to purchasing any upvc hinges to ensure they are the right size.

Crank

Over time, wear and tear could result in damage to your window handle and lock mechanism, or even the crank mechanism. This can make it difficult to open and close your windows. It can also compromise their security. If your window is difficult to open or close or you hear a click when you turn the handle, it could indicate that you need to replace the mechanism. If you are unable to lock your window, or the multipoint lock is broken it could be worth looking into replacing this part of the hardware too.

It's easy to replace the window crank with minimum effort. However, it is essential that you purchase the correct size replacement. Make sure that the replacement is the same height as the old one, which can be determined by measuring the distance between the crank arm guide bushing and the notch that runs along the track that runs across the bottom of the window frame. You can also determine the length of the spindle on your existing handle to determine what size you need to get a replacement.

The type of handle that is fitted to your window will determine the kind of crank mechanism you need for your casement and window awnings.  door handles  are equipped with a mental spindle on the back that is attached to the window frame and controls the window mechanism, while cockspur handles feature pegs that are fixed in place by screws of three or four which are fixed to the sash and frame.

Once you've found the correct replacement, it's easy to install. Remove any screws for mounting trims from the casement cover and gently lift the cover off to reveal the innards of the window operator (Photo 1). Compare the new operating lever with the previous one and remove any trim screws that are rusted. Attach the new lever to the window frame. Replace any screws that are rusted or bent. Then, place the casement cover over the mechanism.
